Examines major social, cultural, economic, and political forces affecting the lives of diverse groups of women using feminist theories. Analyzes a range of issues affecting women, including sexuality, health, family, work, poverty, law, criminal justice, politics, and the broad spectrum of gender-based violence. Assesses how gender intersects with race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, dis/ability, age, religion, and other hierarchical dimensions of human experience. May be offered in a distance-learning format.   • WS-11 Feminist Theories (3 Credits)

    Examines classic and contemporary feminist theories from across a wide range of academic fields used to analyze women, gender, difference, power, and inequality. Focuses on feminist contributions to the field of social research methods. Topics include sex and gender, bodies, sexuality, labor, science and technology, race, intersectionality, and the nation-state. CAB GE D, CSU GE D, IGETC 4, Cal-GETC 4.

    Recommended preparation: ENGL-C1000 (Academic Reading and Writing) or ENGL-C1000H (Academic Reading and Writing - Honors) or ENGL-1AMC (College Composition: Multicultural Emphasis) or ENGL-1AMCH (Honors College Composition: Multicultural Emphasis) or ESL-1A (College Composition for ESL) - Recommended prior to taking this course, but is not required.

  • WS-2 Global Women Gender (3 Credits)

    Examines major social, cultural, economic, and political forces affecting the lives of women from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean. Introduces central social scientific concepts in women's studies. Employs transnational feminist theory to analyze a range of social issues affecting women in developing nations including globalization, violence, trafficking, immigration, work, family, and militarism.   • WS-48 Gender and Science (3 Credits)

    Examines the social dynamics of gender, science, and technology utilizing sociological, anthropological, and feminist theories, methods, and approaches. Analyzes gender and power relations in the origins, organization, and impact of science and technology. Assesses the role of socially-responsible scientific and technological practices in struggles for social justice. Topics include knowledge production, scientific practice, education, professions, reproductive technology, innovation and design, public policy, and sustainability. Focuses on gender as it intersects with other hierarchical dimensions of human experience including, but not limited to, race, class, cultural background, sexuality, and ability status.     Examines the impact of cultural, economic, and political systems on the historical and contemporary social status of Chicanas/Latinas using a social justice perspective. Considers race/ethnicity and gender as they relate to other aspects of human experience including, but not limited to, class, sexuality, age, ability, citizenship, tribal background, region, and religion. Explores topics including colonialism, cultural representation, sexuality, families and intimate relationships, health and medicine, religion, government, law, immigration, criminalization, violence, work, globalization, poverty, education, community engagement, and political activism.
